TRS connector is a family of connectors used for transmitting analog signals, especially audio. It has a cylindrical shape and usually have three contacts, giving rise to the name TRS (English Tip-Ring-Sleeve, lit. tip-ring-cover).
The TRS connectors have three contacts, two for the signal and one for the circuit ground. Among these, there are insulators which prevent the contact between parts. However, there are also connectors with two contacts, called TS (Tip-Sleeve), and with four contacts, called the TRR (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve). When used in audio devices, ST connector is normally used to transmit mono signals while TRS and TRR are used to transmit stereo signals.
The TRR connector (with four contacts) by having an additional transmission channel, can be used for both TRANSMISSION audio and video, and to control data transmission (change in volume, pause, etc.) or microphone reception . It is marketed either in its original format with 1/4 "(6.35 mm) in diameter, and in its miniature versions, 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm in diameter.
